Sand in the synagogue

In the 50 years of the XVII century on Curacao Portuguese Jews arrived. They settled in Willemstad and in 1674 built a first synagogue Mikveh Israel-Emmanuel. It operates to this day, being the oldest functioning synagogue in the Western Hemisphere. In keeping with the tradition of Sephardic Jews in the synagogue floor covered with a thick layer of sand. It is a symbol of wandering in the wilderness and exile of the Jews in Europe. Nearby is the necropolis of the XVII century and the Jewish Museum. Worth to visit the Jewish quarter Charlot, located on the second side Vaygat. At Sharloveg we can see the perfectly preserved houses XVIII-XIX centuries with fronts in the classical style, decorated with exquisite bas-reliefs and medallions with flowers and fruits. If the event is to draw attention also to the picturesque and bustling floating market near the waterfront Sha Kaprileskade. Fresh fish, fruit and vegetables straight from the boats hit the colorful stalls and quickly find buyers.
