In the crusader castle

To the north of Petra in the wilderness, lies a lonely rocky mountain, on top of which shows well-preserved walls and towers of the mighty castle. This Shobak, when - then called Krak - de - Monroe - al. The watchtower was built in 1115 by King Baldwin I of Jerusalem and served to protect the routes between Egypt and Damascus. Castle performed his duties until 1189, has not yet surrendered to the troops Sala - din. The walls of the fortress to this day bear traces of the Mamluk inscriptions of the XIV century. Inside the castle, alas, is destroyed, so it's hard to recreate his original plan. Not far from the gate is a well with leading to the source 375 steps. The main attraction of the castle is the reigning atmosphere of it: the absolute void, battered walls, the wind whistling in the empty window openings, a mosaic of sunlight and shadows dancing on the stone floors ...
