Hawaii is the largest of the Hawaiian (formerly called Sandwich Islands). These islands are located at 20 °. sh. totally isolated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, 4 thousand miles from the nearest major city-San - Francisco, they were only open on Jan. 18, 1778 by J. Cook. Since 1954, Hawaii became 49 - th U.S. state. Numerous local geographical names (as in New Zealand) reflected Polynesian names, often very long, but melodic, characterized by a repetition of syllables (eg, Honolulu, Halemaumau, Nonopapa, etc.).
