Temple of Serapis in Pozzuoli

The classic geological monument area Flegreyskih Elysees is an architectural structure temple of Serapis in Pozzuoli (actually, probably just pavilion). The surface of the remaining three columns na 5,7 m height above sea level, dotted with holes drilled marine kamnetochtsami (Lithodomus dactylus), which serves as proof of subsidence area in the past, below sea level and its subsequent rise. Uplift associated with the eruption of a nearby volcano Monte - Nuovo. This kind of connection with the movement of magma in shallow magma chamber but anyway it is easy to imagine. However, before this idea seemed utterly incredible. Thus, Goethe put forward the following hypothesis, explaining her illustrations: "The temple was destroyed during a volcanic eruption, as in many Flegreyskih Fields volcanoes, of which the New Mountain (Monte - Nuovo) is just one and a half, and burning in solfatara-hour's walk from this temple. Around the columns formed a pond where snails and there-Tolad. drill holes in the Greek tsippolinovom marble. To the objection that Tolad known only to the sea, Goethe replied that, then they must occur in fresh water, and in the waters of saline volcanic ash. For modern geologists tectonic uplift and subsidence, both small and gigantic proportions, a fact quite obvious. Three columns of the Temple of Serapis, "long considered to be truly classic evidence of fluctuations in the level land.
