From Agios - Nikolaos you can swim to a small rocky island called Spinalonga, which means "long suffering". His story is really quite grim. Here is one of the most beautiful Venetian fortresses. Its inhabitants for more than 50 years were lepers. For the period from 1903 to 1957 Spinalonga was their colony. Beautiful view was the only consolation in the plight of patients. Occupied the island, the lepers are simultaneously pushed the Turks, who fled there in fear of becoming infected. Doomed sought to maintain as far as possible a normal life: to create a family, worked. Near the defense of the shaft can see simple patterns by patients. In the bastion of the Don they gave a cemetery - there ended their earthly journey.
