From Cape Horn due to many legends. Cape Horn itself was first investigated by the British world expedition (1831 - 1836 gg.) Aboard the Beagle, under the command of Robert Fitzroy. It was during this expedition began the scientific career of a young Charles Darwin. Until 1914, when the Panama Canal were the first ships (officially it was opened in 1920), Drake Passage was the only way from the Pacific to the Atlantic and vice versa. Therefore, despite the nasty weather, fierce storms and the danger of meeting with the iceberg, close to Cape Horn for hundreds of years held a lively trade line. As a result, Cape Horn entrenched "glory" the largest graveyard of ships, according to various sources of these waters sank nearly a thousand. Therefore, these parallels is called "furious fifties" and they, perhaps, nothing will give way to "roaring fortieth. Among the sailors for hundreds of years of existence the way through the Drake Passage was born a lot of myths and traditions associated with the Cape Horn. Those who sail rounded the Cape once, could pass through a silver earring in his left ear. After the third passage through the Drake Passage "sea wolves" changed the silver earrings on gold. And now all the tourists, obognuvshim Cape Horn on cruise liners, hand over the certificates. Until now, many fans of independent travel check themselves "for strength" to overcome the way around Cape Horn. In 2005 UNESCO declared the Horn natural heritage of mankind.
