Caves in Matala

Less known than the valley, but no less interesting caves in Matala. Tour there will not require as much effort as crossing Samarinskoe Gorge, just need to get to the southern coast of Crete, to the Gulf Messaras. White rocks on the beach, surrounded by blue waters, producing an extraordinary impression. In 1 - 11 centuries Matala caves were used as catacombs, with their natural form suitable for such name (on - Greek kata kyumbas means "next to the pit"). Quite differently perceived purpose of caves modern inhabitants. In 1960 - ies Matala chosen by hippies, who organized themselves in caves, a place for meetings and lodging.
